On another note, aerospace engineers influenced design and architecture through the adaptability of the materials they created for flight. The US’ confidence in becoming a leader in space flights influenced a vast majority of designers and architects.Īt the same time at which we would see some buildings with satellite shapes and cars with ornamental tailfins, product designers would start using some revolutionary materials and bring back ornaments in their projects, following the same space-inspired trend.Īt the end of the Second World War, the whole world was ready to witness NASA reaching outer space.įrom this excitement derived a true interest from the society for science and technology. Or perhaps we’ll see the birth of a new design style, one that mirrors more accurately the anxieties of today.Towards the end of the ’50s, new technical perspectives combined with an interest in abstract futuristic shapes lead to what is known as Space Age design. With all that’s happening today, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see the resurgence of the atomic age visual trend as a reflection of the times. The Atomic Age design style is a perfect little capsule of the paradox between fear and optimism, and how society used art to tame the anxieties of its people. However, we should also recognize that we’ve made some giant leaps for humankind, with the Falcon 9 launch being the latest example. COVID-19 has thrusted the world into paranoia, and nuclear anxiety is still prevalent with the rising tensions between North Korea and the United States gracing the headlines. We still live in a time of uncertainty, but anxieties take the form of new unknowns. Looking back at the origins of the Atomic Age design era, it’s interesting to note how much of society has changed, and how much has not. Others argue that the shapes harken to a simpler time, when nature was ruled by the forms of living organisms such as plants and amoebas. Some say that the sleek, organic shapes of its designs were inspired by the media portrayal of nuclear exposure, rendering human beings into mutant forms. Taking influence from themes of atomic science, common characteristics include abstract shapes and bright colors. Hence, motifs of the atomic particles flooded the designs of middle-class households, from wallpaper to furniture, and what was depicted was a unique vision of the future. Some saw beyond the potential of the atom as a nuclear weapon, and saw its role as a new source of energy. CHARACTERISTICSīut within the political unrest of the 50s was a glimmer of hope. Schools demonstrated duck-and-cover drills in case of atomic bomb attack, fallout shelters were being built, media portrayal of nuclear attacks influenced the public conciousness and out came a design style that reflected the zeitgeist. With nowhere to run, Cold War anxieties permeated into every aspect of life. While the countries flaunted their firepower, citizens had no choice but to embrace the races on the sidelines, with fears of rising tensions leading to an all-out nuclear war. The 1950s were home to major technological advancement: the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War extended from nuclear weapons to the space race, with both parties eager to prove their superiority as innovators at the frontiers of technology. The style of these posters take heavy inspiration from the atomic age. Soaring on the wings of a private company – SpaceX – this is also the first time since 2011 that American astronauts have been launched into space from American ground.Īs we celebrate the significance of this scientific milestone, I’d like to throwback to a bygone era of design that stemmed from a time of changing technology and space exploration – the Atomic Age of graphic design.ĭid you know: Back in 2015, SpaceX unveiled three retrofuturistic posters for Mars travel. As the Falcon 9 rocket launched on May 30th of this year, it ignited a new era of space travel.

Just last week, he was meeting with a producer about a role originally written for a hearing actor. Kotsur said he has also noticed this shift in the film industry. In the last few years, movies like “A Quiet Place Part II,” Marvel’s “Eternals” and television shows like “Only Murders in the Building” have featured deaf actors playing deaf characters. It feels like this is the next movement and the next step.” “The deaf and disabled community has been really ignored by Hollywood, even in all of the diversity conversation. What the cast and crew learned from making “CODA” can hopefully “kick the door open” for more inclusive projects in the future, she added. “By no means was I trying to represent the deaf experience or the CODA experience, because there's a huge range of experiences in those communities.” Heder acknowledged that one film can’t represent an entire community, especially one like the deaf and disabled community that has been so underrepresented in Hollywood. “Black, deaf women experience racism at a much higher rate, and as a CODA navigating these dynamics in a hospital, it’s incredibly difficult.” “But what we do not discuss in the film is, I think, this stigma, bias and racism that is perpetuated in hospitals and how that intersects with the deaf experience,” she said. Armand has helped her mother with medical appointments since she was a kid because hospitals can’t always find a culturally sensitive interpreter to assist. However, some scenes rang truer for her, like the scene where Ruby interprets for her parents at a doctor’s appointment. It’s not as diverse as I would like it to be,” she said. “I feel like the deaf community, in general, prioritizes white experiences, especially in Massachusetts. “What does it look like to be a CODA, a child of immigrants, where you not only have to interpret ASL, but what if your parent does not even know ASL because they're trying to learn English at the same time? That's something that happened with me,” she said.Īrmand said that there are scenes in the film - like when Leo and Frank’s boat is pulled over by the Coast Guard after not hearing and responding to police sirens - that could have played out much differently had the characters not been white. She says there are many other dynamics that the film could have explored. Raised by a deaf mother who immigrated from Haiti, she communicates with lip reading and home signs, a gestural communication system created between a hearing child and a deaf parent.Īrmand said she was glad to see “CODA” create opportunities for deaf actors, but the film highlighted the “privileged lens” that the Rossi family had, which does not necessarily reflect the experience of all CODAs or deaf families. WATCH: "CODA's" Daniel Durant on roles for deaf actorsĪshley Armand is a CODA who grew up in Brookline and now works in the tech industry. “I'm almost as proud of the way that we made the movie as I am of the actual movie, because I think it was groundbreaking and it did set a path for other people to follow.” “We were kind of inventing a new process,” Heder said, and hopes that “CODA” can provide a blueprint for future film and TV sets. Kotsur said he is thrilled that the film was able to “showcase ASL,” vulgarities and all, saying, “how often do you see that on the big screen?” Throughout filming, there were always multiple ASL interpreters on set to facilitate communication between the actors and crew, as well as ASL consultants behind the scenes to make sure dialogue wasn’t cut off and the actors’ signing was always in the frame. “And then when our gloves came off, we could go back to adapting to ASL with our hands without these thick rubber gloves.” “There were some signs in ASL that didn't exist for some of this fishing equipment, so we had to develop almost our own fishermen sign language and develop these gestures for what tools to use,” he said. Since Kotsur was often acting on a fishing boat with thick rubber gloves, he had to get creative to communicate. Kotsur says that authentic representation was important to Heder, who encouraged the cast to improvise and incorporate bits of deaf culture into their scenes. During the casting process for "CODA," Kotsur’s co-star Marlee Matlin, the first and only other deaf actor to win an Oscar (she won best actress for her role in "Children of a Lesser God" in 1986), insisted on having deaf actors play the deaf characters. The story is based on a 2014 French film, “La Famille Bélier,” which cast hearing actors to play deaf roles. She has dreams of becoming a singer and studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, but leaving home would mean that the family could not rely on her to interpret for them. CODA stands for “child of deaf adults,” and the film is a coming-of-age story about Frank’s daughter Ruby, the only hearing member of her Gloucester fishing family. Not only do we get the Climbing Villain but also the Talking Killer (Silver explains his grandiose schemes when he should just simply kill Van Damme), and all of the usual cliches involving a cop who loses his partner and is assigned a new partner he doesn't like. The movie is a harvest of entries from Ebert's Little Movie Glossary. The movie, directed by Peter ("2010") Hyams, meanwhile has some sly fun with sex scenes that turn out to be only Virtual Reality, and a moment in 1929 when a character utters that immortal two-word saying that " Forrest Gump" allegedly did not invent for a bumper sticker until the 1970s. Van Damme ventures into the past, meets Silver and other baddies there, and zips back and forth in an increasingly desperate attempt to save his life, his wife and the future, while not getting hopelessly entangled in paradoxes. If it does not go into the past with them, why is this necessary? If it stays in the present, why does it disappear? And why, oh why, if travel backwards is so difficult, are the travelers able to return to the present by simply pushing a button on a little gizmo they wear strapped to their bodies? But never mind. Fine, except when the travelers materialize in the past, the rocket car has disappeared. Just before it hits the wall, it disappears. Ron Silver plays McComb, the ambitious Senator who plans to manipulate the past in order to get himself elected President, and of course that makes him a criminal, guilty of "time travel with intent to alter the future." The time travelers launch themselves into the past by being strapped into a rocket car which hurtles down rails toward a wall. How the CIA let this plum get away from them is not explained. government is concerned about attempts to alter the past, and has decided to create its timecop force, to be run by District of Columbia policemen. The house seems too large for their needs, until we realize the movie plans to employ the Climbing Villain Syndrome in its climactic scenes, which take place on a Dark and Stormy Night those gables will be necessary so that people can hang from them by their fingernails. (The belief that the amount of gold that can be carried on one horse would make a financial difference in 2004 is the most optimistic element in the movie.) Van Damme plays the cop, named Walker, who lives with his wife, Melissa, ( Mia Sara) in the kind of turreted, gabled, four-story Gothic manor that, as we all know, is the typical residence of Washington, D.C. It's a cop buddy movie about a political conspiracy, ranging roughly from 1863, when gold intended for Lee's army is stolen, to 2004, when it may be used to finance a political campaign. When the two selves make contact, they are immediately processed by a computer morphing program which melts them into one another with some of the same fearsome consequences that made life miserable for the poor silver guy in " Terminator 2: Judgment Day." "Timecop" throws everything into the pot. The rules are, you cannot touch "yourself" without setting up a fearsome rent in the fabric of time. Even in the last frames of the film, we are being presented with paradoxes, as when a weary timecop ( Jean-Claude Van Damme), having battled through the decades to set things right, returns home and is greeted by a child he has never seen before, who cries out, " Dad!" What and where is the person, identical to Van Damme, who the child has known as Dad? Doesn't that mean there is an extra timecop around? What happens when they meet? Ah, but the movie has already answered that question, in a scene where a time-traveling evil U.S. "Timecop," a low-rent "Terminator," is the kind of movie that is best not thought about at all, for that way madness lies. And furthermore, how can a traveling timecop return to the present from the past without, in effect, traveling into the future? You see what we're up against here. That is because "you can travel back in time, but not into the future, because the future hasn't happened yet." Yes, but once you do travel back in time, the present becomes the future that has not yet happened. Well, says the movie, the present is defined as Now. Mir218-2-5p expression was decreased in Mir218-2 −/− embryos at E16.5. A Mir218-2 knockout was generated to assess the significance of miR-218-2 in a mammalian model. Organized progenitor cell movement was reconstituted when cells were co-transfected with Dicer siRNA and low-dose Mir218-5p mimic. EPCs transfected with a MIR218-5p inhibitor in three-dimensional normoxic culture showed premature capillary formation. ROBO1 transcript, a downstream target of MIR218-2-5p, showed inverse expression to MIR218-2-5p. MIR218 expression was clarified in cell culture experiments in which increases in both SLIT3 and MIR218-2-5p expressions were observed after 5 minutes of hypoxia. Murine renal artery–derived EPCs (CD34 +/CD105 −) showed down-regulation of mmu-Mir218-5p/U6 RNA ratio after ischemic injury, while in human renal arteries, MIR218-5p expression was up-regulated after ischemic injury. We hypothesized that kidney hypoxia initiates the up-regulation of miR-218 expression in endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to guide endocapillary repair. Ischemia due to hypoperfusion is one of the most common forms of acute kidney injury. These experiments demonstrate that miR-218 expression can be triggered by hypoxia and modulates EPC migration in the kidney. Systemic injection of miR-218-5p decreased serum creatinine after injury. Mir218-2+/- decreased peritubular capillary density at postnatal day 14 and increased serum creatinine after ischemia in adult mice. Mir218-2-/- decreased CD34+ angioblasts in the ureteric bud at E16.5 and were nonviable. Mir218-2-5p expression was decreased in Mir218-2-/- embryos at E16.5. Murine renal artery-derived EPCs (CD34+/CD105-) showed down-regulation of mmu-Mir218-5p/U6 RNA ratio after ischemic injury, while in human renal arteries, MIR218-5p expression was up-regulated after ischemic injury. I like to use the loose bottom from a smaller tin (6 inch for example), place that into the centre of the cooled tart and sprinkle the lemon crumb around the outside then lift off the loose bottom revealing a neat finished decoration. Leave to cool then decorate with the crunchy lemon crumb. Pour the filling into the tart, level it with the back of a spoon, transfer to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the centre feels firm and set. Whilst the pastry shell is warm use a serrated knife to carefully trim the edges, leaving a neat finish. Remove the pastry from the oven and immediately turn the temperature down to 160 degrees c. Remove the paper and beans then return the pastry shell to the oven for another 3-5 minutes to dry the base. Prick the bottom of the tin with a fork, line with baking paper and baking beans then bake blind for 13-15 minutes until the pastry is golden brown. Chill for 15 minutes or until the oven reaches a temperature of 190 degrees c. Line the flan tin allowing the surplus pastry to hang over the edges. Roll out the pastry between two sheets of plastic (I use the liner from a cereal packet for this), rolling out this way means you don’t need to use extra flour, the dough doesn’t stick and is easy to handle. The bread will absorb the liquids and thicken. Add the three eggs and mix well then set aside. Add then the finely grated lemon zest plus the juice and the juice from the lemon used for the lemon crumb. Pour the measured golden syrup, black treacle or maple syrup into the bowl and stir well. Blitz white bread (cut off the crusts) to a crumb and transfer to a large bowl. Whilst the dough is resting prepare the filling. Wrap in a beeswax wrap or freezer bag and chill for at least half an hour. Incorporate then the egg yolk and water mix and bind the dough together by hand or allow the machine to form a ball. To make the pastry : in a food processor or by hand mix together the flour and salt and chilled butter and blitz in the machine or rub in room temperature butter by hand until the mix resembles bread crumbs. This crumb makes a great topping for ice cream etc so if you decide to make more it will keep in an airtight jar or plastic box. Maple syrup and golden syrup in plastic bottles are easier to pour. If you dry your crumb in the oven pop tins of golden syrup and black treacle in at the same time to warm up and make them easier to pour. The crumb will become hard and can be broken down into a small crumb using the back of a fork. Leave in a warm place or a low oven and allow to dry. Simply finely zest the lemon and stir the zests and sugar together on a wide plate or bowl then spread out. Start by making the fruit crumb as it needs an hour to dry and crisp up in a dry warm place – or a low oven at 50 degrees c). Take full advantage of Serato DJ’s features.
